Byteboard's new product will change how you interview

Byteboard’s new product will change how you interview

Byteboard’s latest release of CodeCollab makes interviewing easier and more effective at every stage of the technical interview process for both employers and job seekers.

Traditional technical interviews have long been criticized for their shortcomings: inherent biases, subjective assessments, unrealistic interview tasks, an overly lengthy interview process and an unduly amount of stress placed on candidates. This often leads to mismatches in finding the right candidate to perform the job.

At a time when workers are expected to do even more with less, the wrong hire comes at a great cost to the company–and the hiring team.

For companies seeking top technical talent, Byteboard is thrilled to introduce CodeCollab–a collaborative live coding tool for your onsite interviews. Rooted in our project-based evaluation methodology, CodeCollab along with Byteboard’s existing assessment product, CoreEval, makes the Byteboard platform your single platform for any and all technical interviews–at any stage in the interview process.

Byteboard: Your single platform for technical interviews

At its core, Byteboard provides two powerful tools rooted in project-based interview practices: CoreEval and CodeCollab, which seamlessly integrate to provide a comprehensive solution for hiring teams while offering candidates a great experience.

CoreEval offers project-based take-home assessments using real-work artifacts to evaluate candidates’ skills relevant to the job. Designed to replace technical phone screen rounds, CoreEval assessments include technical reasoning exercises and code implementation tasks to evaluate candidates across various domains, including fullstack engineering, staff backend engineering, applied AI and data engineering. Through these exercises, candidates can demonstrate skills like systems reasoning, clean code, trade-off analysis, and 20+ other domain-specific skills in a practical and familiar environment.

With open-ended prompts and a comprehensive and thoroughly validated rubric-based evaluation system, CoreEval provides rich insights into candidate's problem-solving approach and coding proficiency. Hiring Managers and recruiters receive an overall recommendation on the candidate’s performance, calibrated and customized to their team’s expectations, alongside a detailed report on the candidate’s strengths and areas of opportunity. This helps teams quickly and effectively determine whether a candidate should advance to the next stage of the interview process, typically the virtual-onsite interview.

CodeCollab, the newest product in the Byteboard portfolio, provides a familiar interface to conduct the virtual-onsite interview. A collaborative live coding environment, CodeCollab flows seamlessly from the CoreEval assessment, and includes interview guides and content to drive more equity and consistency–leading to a better candidate experience and better hires.

Using a familiar IDE based on Visual Studio Code, CodeCollab allows hiring teams to paircode and collaborate on multi-file codebases, run, test, and debug code, understand candidate communication and problem-solving skills, and adapt follow-up questions on the fly. Hiring teams can use Byteboard’s ready-to-go materials within CodeCollab–or start from scratch with their own content and/or a pre-loaded code configuration template.

"Our platform goes beyond just assessing technical skills; it empowers hiring teams to evaluate candidates holistically," said Sargun Kaur, CEO and Co-Founder of Byteboard. "Our integrated interview guides help hiring managers conduct more consistent and effective interviews, while our integrated platform ensures a smooth and cohesive experience for both candidates and recruiters."

Major shifts in hiring technical talent

According to studies by SHRM and others, many companies are now transitioning to skills-based assessments in order to find top talent, with 78% of HR professionals saying the quality of their organization's hires has improved due to their use of skills-based assessments.

Growing concerns around the traditional forms of interviewing and evaluating technical talent have been exacerbated by the use of generative AI and AI-assisted code tools.

Hiring in the age of AI requires this new skills-based approach–one with real-world problems with rich contextual nuances, that present a more accurate measure of a candidate's capabilities.

"Traditional technical interviews fall short in assessing a candidate's real-world abilities," said Kaur. "Byteboard's project-based interviewing methodology delivers more trusted results because it’s rooted in the behavior of an engineer's day-to-day environment.”

Byteboard makes the technical interview easier for everyone–just ask our customers (and their candidates)

Byteboard simplifies the hiring process for hiring managers and recruiters by centralizing interview notes, comments, and assessment materials in one platform that integrates with the company’s ATS of choice.

By partnering with Byteboard, Betterment doubled their engineering team with a skills-based interviewing and assessment process.

“Through Byteboard’s blind technical interview, we were able to efficiently filter through our applicant pool to pinpoint strong candidates with the engineering skill sets we need to take our product to the next level,” said Anil Beniwal, VP of Engineering at Betterment, now CTO of Arcadia, another Byteboard customer.

In another case study, Ezoic expanded their engineering team and doubled their onsite-to-offer rate, while saving their engineers hundreds of hours of time.

The Byteboard interview platform consistently receives high ratings from candidates for its user-friendly interface and engaging assessment process as well.

“There was a lot of support even before the interview, which I appreciate a lot. Overall, the experience was great,” said one candidate.

“It was the first time I felt like I had fun after the interview,” said another candidate. “I really wish I could do it again.”

The results are in

Byteboard boasts an onsite-to-offer rate that is two times higher than the industry average and a 30% lower time-to-hire compared to traditional processes. What does that mean? Higher quality candidates, better hires and less time spent interviewing.

“At Byteboard, we're empowering companies to make data-driven decisions and surface top talent faster than the traditional interview process, allowing your engineers to focus on what they do best: build,” said Kaur.
